Toyota Highlander comes in a Mild-Hybrid variant while the Mitsubishi Outlander offers a PHEV as well as a petrol variant.

Toyota Highlander and Mitsubishi Outlander are popular Japanese SUVs and each other's competitors in the UAE market. Both the cars offer Hybrid Engine Options, but the nature of the hybrid systems equipped in both these cars is very different from each other. Additionally, the Outlander also gets a petrol engine option.

Technical Specs: Toyota Highlander Vs Mitsubishi Outlander

Talking about the Hybrid systems that both cars get. The Toyota Highlander has a mild-hybrid system that features a small electric motor to assist the gasoline engine, improving efficiency during acceleration and deceleration while the Mitsubishi Outlander has a plug-in hybrid system with a larger electric motor, a rechargeable battery pack, and the ability to charge externally, offering a longer electric-only driving range. 

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV is powered by a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, internal combustion engine with a mild-hybrid twin motor setup that churns out a combined output of 244 horsepower and 237Nm of torque, mated with a Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT). The All-wheel drive SUV accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 190kmph. The car has a 65-litre fuel tank, providing a fuel economy of 20kmpl. 

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that makes 221 horsepower and 199Nm of torque, the car doesn't have a gearbox instead the front motors act as a CVT. The four-wheel drive Japanese SUV accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 10.5 seconds and is capable of reaching the top speed of 170kmph. The hybrid SUV provides a fuel efficiency of 50kmpl and has a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres. It gets an option of 16 and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Outlander PHEV gets a 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack and has a fully electric range of 40km. The SUV gets charged in 5 hours and 30 minutes when charged from a regular home charger and also gets regenerative braking.

The Outlander also gets a petrol engine that is available in two different drive configurations. The 2.5-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine produces 181 horsepower and 245Nm of torque and is paired with a CVT. The Front-wheel drive variant comes in a five-seater variant and has a top speed of 191kmph while the 4-wheel drive comes in a seven-seater variant, has a top speed of 187kmph and gets 20-inch alloy wheels in both variants. It carries a 55 litres fuel tank and delivers a fuel economy of 10.2kmpl.

Inside the cabin, The Toyota Highlander's GXR features a 7-inch TFT display with a 6-speaker JBL audio system and fabric interior whereas the VXR features a 12.3-inch TFT display with JBL 11-speaker audio system, leather interior, an additional head-up display and ventilated front seats. It is a 7-seater SUV with three-row seats and gets a 332-litre boot space.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets an 8-inch infotainment display with an 8-speaker Mitsubishi power sound system and a 12.3-inch driver's display. Whereas the petrol variant gets a 9-inch infotainment screen with a 10-speaker Bose premium sound system, a 12.3-inch driver's display and a head-up display. Both the PHEV and petrol models get optional fabric and leather interiors. It has both 5-seat and 7-seat options and gets a 463-litre cargo space.

Both Toyota Highlander and Mitsubishi Outlander get features like USB charging sockets, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, drive modes and adjustable seats etc. Additionally, both SUVs also get panoramic sunroofs with their higher trim options.

The Toyota Highlander boasts a stylish and muscular stance. It has an aerodynamic appearance thanks to its sculpted body lines, strong grille, and stylish LED headlights. A contemporary touch is added with the panoramic sunroof and LED taillights. The Highlander combines both functionality and aesthetic appeal thanks to its strong roof rails. It gets 18-inch alloys with the GXR variant and 20-inch alloys with the VXR variant.

The Mitsubishi Outlander has a stylish and dynamic look. Its front fascia design features a striking grille, sleek LED headlamps and chrome styling. At the rear, the SUV features LED taillights and an electric tailgate. The hybrid variant also gets PHEV badging. The SUV also gets a roof spoiler and roof rails for enhanced functionality. The PHEV variant gets an option of 16 and 18-inch alloy wheels while the petrol variant gets 20-inch alloys.

The Toyota Highlander comes with eight airbags and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ System that includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Keep Assist, Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Automatic High Beams.

The Mitsubishi Outlander comes with six airbags as standard and gets a host of safety features like Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist, Automatic High Beams and Blind Spot Detection.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is priced at AED 169,900 for the GXR variant and at AED 199,900* for the VXR variant whereas the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV's price starts at around AED 140,500* and goes upto AED 153,500* in the UAE. The Outlander's petrol is priced between AED 106,900* - AED 148,900*
