Toyota and Lexus have recently introduced their latest rugged off-road contenders: the 2024 Lexus GX and the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. These two SUVs showcase a boxy and edgy stance and are based on the same TNGA-F platform. Boasting spacious and comfortable interiors along with advanced technology, these vehicles promise a fusion of comfort and luxury with a powerful road presence and both on and off-road performance. Given their shared platform and numerous similarities, today we embark on a detailed car comparison to ultimately determine which one best suits your needs and preferences.


Technical specs: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Vs Lexus GX 

Both the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the Lexus GX are based on the same TNGA-F platform and are built with strong and lightweight ladder frame that increases body rigidity and improved on-road handling. Both the SUV features a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension.

The new Land Cruiser Prado comes loaded with various features Electric power steering (EPS), the Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD)and the improved Multi-Terrain Select. It also gets a centre-locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case

The Lexus GX 550 get Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor systems are standard on GX Overtrail grades for optimal traction on the trails, along with an Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) for improved wheel articulation. An electronic locking rear differential is exclusive on OVERTRAIL for maximum traction.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado available engine options

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado gets five engine options globally including two petrol, a diesel, a petrol hybrid and a diesel hybrid powertrain. All five engines get a four-wheel-drive system as standard. Out of the five available engines, only two will make it to UAE as the 2.4-litre turbo petrol and the 2.8-litre turbo diesel are planned for the Middle East. 

1. A 2.4-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 281 horsepower and 430Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Planned for the Middle East, Eastern Europe, etc.

2. A 2.8-litre turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 204 horsepower and 500Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Planned for Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Japan, the Middle East, etc.

3. Another 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 48-volt hybrid motor that produces 330 horses and 630Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is the most powerful engine in the line-up and is planned for North America, China, etc.

4. Another 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine with a 48-volt hybrid motor that churns out 204 horsepower and 500Nm of torque with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Planned for Austria, Western Europe, etc.

5. A 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 163 horsepower and 246Nm of torque, mated with a six-speed Electronic Control transmission (ECT). It is the least powerful engine and is planned for Eastern Europe, Japan, etc.

2024 Lexus GX available engine options

The 2024 Lexus GX will get two available engine options including a 3.4-litre twin turbo V6 petrol and a 2.4-litre turbo petrol hybrid engine. Both the engines get a four-wheel-drive system as standard.

1. The 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine produces 349 horsepower and 649Nm of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

2. The 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder turbo petrol hybrid engine, although Lexus hasn't any details about this powertrain

Interior details: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Vs Lexus GX

The 2024 GX will be offered in six grades: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and all-new for Lexus, Overtrail and Overtrail+ while the Land Cruiser Prado will be available in three trims, the Land Cruiser 1958Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition

The Toyota LC Prado will feature an 8-inch or a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. It gets an electric power steering and a fully digital display for the driver. The seats on the Prado are comfortable and spacious and can accommodate up to seven passengers. Interior colour options include Black and Java colour options. It gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 with active safety and convenience systems.

The Additional premium package adds a 14-speaker JBL audio system, a head-up display, power-heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a digital rearview mirror, a moonroof, and other additional features.

The Lexus GX features a 12.3-inch driver's display and a 14-inch multimedia display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, It comes standard with a 10-speaker premium surround sound system, with available 21- Speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound. Additional options include Digital Key, Cool Box, Head-Up Display, Traffic Jam Assist, Cold Area Package and Tonneau Cover. It gets Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 with active safety and convenience systems.

The GX SUV comes with a modern and luxurious cabin with powered and ventilated seats. Interior is offered in black, dapple grey, or saddle tan semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe trimmed interior with black or dark brown-grained trim. Overtrail grades include a GX-exclusive colour combination of Black NuLuxe trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents or Chateau NuLuxe trimmed upholstery with Olive Ultrasuede accents with black ornamentation. It can accommodate up to seven passengers.

Exterior details: Lexus GX Vs Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

While the Lexus GX and the Toyota Land Cruiser both exhibit a rugged and authoritative presence with their boxy stance, they distinguish themselves through distinct design elements. Both SUVs feature different front and rear-end designs.

The GX gets a large X-shaped front grille with Lexus badging, it has a modern and sleek-looking headlight with a subtle but robust tailgate design and sleek taillights that run across the tailgate to join.

The Toyota Prado gets a rectangular front grille with 'TOYOTA' badging, it gets rectangular or round LED headlights, depending on the variant, while it also gets a similar tailgate as its Lexus sibling but the rectangular tailgate design gives the rear design a different look.

Exterior Paint Options, Ground Clearance and Wheels: Lexus GX Vs Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Depending on grade, the 2024 GX will be offered in 11 exterior colour options including Eminent White Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl, Atomic Silver, GX-first Incognito, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, and Nightfall Mica. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades will offer exclusive bi-tone exterior colour combinations including Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and Lexus-first Earth/Black Roof.

The 2024 Land Cruiser Prado offers seven exterior colour choices, including unique options like Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, and Meteor Shower. Two-tone choices include Trail Dust and Heritage Blue, which come with a Grayscape roof. The SUV has over 100 available customization options, from off-road equipment to sporting gear carriers.

The Lexus GX has a ground clearance of 8.2 inches and is equipped with optional 18, 20 and 22-inch alloy wheels, while the Land Cruiser Prado gets a ground clearance of 8.7 inches and is fitted with 18-inch standard and 20-inch optional alloy wheels

Launch and Availability: Lexus GX And Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

The 2024 Lexus GX will be assembled at the Toyota-Lexus Tahara plant in Japan and is expected to go on sale in early 2024. The 2024 Land Cruiser Prado will be built in Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan, it will arrive in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2024. Toyota has confirmed the pricing for the new Land Cruiser Prado to start around the mid-$50,000 range in the USA, around AED 200,000*. The exact price will be announced closer to its launch date.
