Emirates Global Motor Electric (EGME), a subsidiary of the Al Fahim Group, has pioneered the introduction of the GCC region’s first green public transport fleet. This major milestone underscores EGME's role as a key driver in sustainable transport solutions in the UAE, supplying a mix of battery electric and hydrogen-powered buses as part of Abu Dhabi’s ambitious Green Bus Programme. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader sustainability goals, which aim to transform Abu Dhabi Island into a fully green public transport zone by 2030.

The Green Fleet Initiative, spearheaded by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) under Abu Dhabi Mobility, saw EGME contributing a total of 15 eco-friendly buses. These state-of-the-art vehicles represent the first of their kind in the Middle East to integrate both electric and hydrogen power, setting a new benchmark for public transport across the region. This historic launch is a significant achievement for EGME, marking the company as a leader in the region's transition toward green transportation systems.

EGME’s Vision for Sustainable Mobility

As the driving force behind this innovative fleet, EGME has partnered with some of the world’s most advanced vehicle manufacturers. EGME is the UAE’s distributor for MCV, an Egyptian electric bus manufacturer, and Wisdom Motors, a leading Chinese hydrogen bus manufacturer. This partnership ensures that Abu Dhabi’s public transport system benefits from cutting-edge electric and hydrogen technologies, offering a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

"We are proud to be at the forefront of Abu Dhabi’s transition to green public transport,” said Ahmed Al Fahim, Chairman of Al Fahim Group. “Our innovative products and services, combined with a focus on environmental sustainability, support the emirate’s goals for a greener future.”

Green Bus Programme: Transforming Public Transport by 2030

The Green Fleet Initiative is part of the larger Green Bus Programme led by Abu Dhabi Mobility, which is committed to reducing the emirate’s carbon footprint. This programme reflects the emirate’s commitment to addressing climate change and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. As part of this commitment, Abu Dhabi Mobility plans to convert the entire public transport system on Abu Dhabi Island into a green zone by 2030, utilizing electric and hydrogen-powered buses for both city and intercity routes.

The introduction of these buses follows an earlier deployment of nine electric intercity buses during the COP28 conference, which facilitated the transport of visitors and delegates between Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi and Dubai's Expo City.

Abu Dhabi’s Role as a Regional Sustainability Leader

Abu Dhabi's Green Fleet Initiative marks the first deployment of battery and hydrogen-powered buses in the GCC, setting a new standard for public transportation in the region. By taking these significant steps, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable transportation solutions and paving the way for other cities in the Middle East to adopt greener public transport models.

The use of hydrogen-powered buses is particularly noteworthy, offering a sustainable alternative for long-distance routes and complementing the electric buses used for city transport. Hydrogen technology, with its longer range and quicker refueling times, is expected to play a key role in reducing emissions across Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

A Greener Future for Public Transport

As part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision for a cleaner, greener future, the Green Bus Programme represents a transformative shift in the way the city approaches public transport. EGME’s role in supplying these innovative buses is a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainability and its leadership in bringing advanced mobility solutions to the region.

The integration of these eco-friendly buses is expected to reduce carbon emissions significantly and improve the overall quality of public transportation. By continuing to introduce environmentally-friendly vehicles, Abu Dhabi is making great strides in reducing its environmental impact while setting an example for sustainable urban development across the GCC.

The Green Bus Service is already operational, marking a new chapter in Abu Dhabi’s journey toward a sustainable public transport network, with EGME continuing to play a pivotal role in this transformation.
