Volkswagen has launched its smallest iteration of an SUV with the new T-Cross. The German auto giant has placed the new offering below the T-Roc in the line-up and mechanically takes inspiration from its hatchback-sibling Polo supermini.
The model is based on the MQB A0 platform measuring 4,107mm long and 1,558mm tall. This makes the CUV 54mm longer and 97mm wider than the Polo. “The T-Cross is about versatility - that's its number one focus,” Felix Kaschutzke, T-Cross project for manager sales & marketing, told Auto Express. “This car is built for young, small families, the car is very versatile for these types of customers.”
Catering to penny-pinchers, Volkswagen has ditched a four-wheel drive powertrain for a front-wheel drive. In Europe, the car was launched with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, mated to a six-speed manual as standard and a seven-speed DCT as optional. The company is also offering the T-Cross with a 1.6-litre TDI engine in the continent.

Inside the cabin, the T-Cross retains heavy design cues from the Polo including a central touchscreen on the dash that gives access to all of the car's functions with options between a 6.5 and 8.0 inches screen size.
The CUV will be offered as an entry-level S model and move up to SE, SEL and R-Line trims. Alloy wheels will be offered as standard across all models with sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches. Meanwhile, options on the new T-Cross includes wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, keyless go and a sunroof.
“What we made sure with the T-Cross is to make it a true SUV, with SUV characteristics such as the seating position and versatility, this is the number one priority we have with the car,” he added. “This is the difference between this car and other competitors - we are doing it differently.” Said Kaschutzke.
