Taking its flagship prodigy ahead, the upcoming generation of Jaguar’s F-Type is likely to be available with a hybrid powertrain, expected to be on sale by 2022. Apart from that reports also suggest that a fully electric version of the same car is also in the works which would lock horns with Porsche’s Taycan.

Along with the hybrid-powertrain, the car will be a mid-engined sports car that would rival the McLaren and Audi Sport. Engineers at Jaguar have used the Honda NSX as a benchmark for the development of the next-gen model.

However, the mechanical setup of the car is yet to be finalized. It is also likely that the car will possess two electric motors with one on each axle making it a four-wheel drive. This would be supplemented by a mid-mounted V6 engine which will put out over 550 bhp of power.

The upcoming model would be the second model with a mid-mounted engine that Jaguar has ever produced. The first one being the XJ220 that was launched in 1992 and continued to be sold through 1994.

Although the new car is expected to replace the current running model, the new car is likely to have little resemblance to the outgoing one. Reports suggest that the next-gen F-Type and its complete electric variant will share the same flexible platform.

Jaguar recently launched its hybrid compact SUV, the I-Pace which was widely accepted as the best of its kind. The I-Pace is powered by a concentric permanent magnet synchronous motors which means that the car’s driveshaft runs through the middle of them. This technology is one of Jaguar’s own creations.

Amid the major revamps, the company is also likely to change the nameplate of the car to J-Type, which was hinted after the compant applied to trademark the name not more than a month ago.
