The UAE Ministry of Economy has released a directive regarding the import of Volkswagen EVs into the United Arab Emirates through unauthorized dealerships and traders.

What did the UAE Ministry of Economy directive say?

According to the directive, any new or pre-owned Volkswagen electric vehicle cannot be imported into the country other than through the authorized dealership. All the Volkswagen EVs sold in Dubai and the Northern Emirates in future will be only through Al Nabooda Automobiles and most importantly would be built and tested to meet UAE market requirements.

Why is the restriction is imposed for the import of Volkswagen electric vehicles?

The decision to restrict the import of Volkswagen EVs into the country through unauthorized channels was made due to concerns that the majority of these electric vehicles are manufactured to be carrying “Made in China” specifications, and may not be suited to the different climatic conditions in the UAE.

Volkswagen and Al Nabooda Automobiles’ response to the directive

Both Volkswagen and Al Nabooda Automobiles welcomed this decision and released a joint statement that said, “Our priority continues to be the safety of our customers, we remain committed to ensuring Volkswagen drivers can enjoy the car they drive and can feel assured that their vehicle is built and tested for this market, to both the highest standards of quality and safety and always in line with local laws”
