Nissan recorded a surge of ten percent in sales of electric cars globally for the fiscal year 2017. Part of the rise in demand was driven by the Nissan Leaf, the world’s best-selling EV.

The zero-emissions Nissan Leaf has been the premier choice for customers looking for a practical, affordable electric car. With its mix of decent range, features, driving dynamics, and value for money, the Nissan Leaf soon became the best-selling electric car, a position it has not conceded to any other car yet. Nissan introduced a new generation in 2017, and demand for the redesigned Leaf rose even further. The all-electric EV posted major growth across all major markets of Japan, Europe, and the USA. The new generation Leaf is set to expand its reach to more markets including Latin America, Asia, and Oceania regions.

“The strong performance of Nissan’s EV models globally is a testimony to our expertise and leadership in electric vehicle technology,” said Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci, head of the company’s electric automobile arm. “The unprecedented response to the most advanced electric car in the world, the Nissan Leaf, contributed significantly to the robust growth of Nissan in 2017. The Nissan Leaf is the best-selling electric car in the world, with the widest reach and the greatest availability. We expect its continued leadership in 2018.”

54,451 units of the Nissan leaf were dispatched by Nissan in FY2017. This translates to an increase of 15% over the previous year when the company moved 47,423 cars. Since 2010, Nissan has sold more than 320,000 units of the Leaf, which is now available in 51 markets across the globe.

“As the manufacturer of the world’s most popular electric car, we are excited to showcase our expertise in the field, highlight our advanced technologies, and work with leaders to advance electrification of mobility in the region,” said Kalyana Sivagnanam, President of Nissan Middle East and Regional Vice-President of Nissan in Africa, Middle East and India. “The Nissan Leaf was very well received by the audience from across the region at platforms where it was showcased. It is great to see optimism towards the vehicle as we strengthen our commitment to introducing the best-selling electric car to the Middle East.”

The new Nissan Leaf acquired a five-star safety rating from the Japan New Car Assessment Program this February. Along with a new exterior, the second-generation Leaf brings advanced tech like ProPilot (ProPilot Assist in the U.S.), ProPilot Park and E-Pedal, and also manages to deliver increased range and power. The EV will soon be launched in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Uruguay.
