McLaren in its latest business plan made its intentions clear about a completely electrified lineup by 2025. Named as "Track25", the reports not only talks about electrifying its line up but also the company's future focus on finding a demanding balance between performance and luxury.
McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, who recently spoke to TopGear provided a brief outline about its aspirations regarding the company's high-tech flagship model, P1. Flewitt stated that the upcoming P1 will most likely surpass the performance threshold of its 2013 model which already has a 3.8-litre turbocharged V8 engine combined with a torquey electric motor, producing close to 900bhp.
"We've got a couple of options around powertrains, and I don't think we'll be purely EV by then, so logically it will be a hybrid," Flewitt told Top Gear in an interview.
According to Flewitt, while the P1 set benchmarks for an ideal supercar, it had also faced numerous criticism stating that the car was under-tyred. As an answer the same people, the company CEO stated that the car would find the right balance between a track car and a road car". "If you think back to P1, it was actually a road car. It was good on the track, but we had people say it was a little under-tyred and so on. It was a great road car that was a lot of fun on the track." He added, "The P1 successor won't compromise road ability - it'll be a combination of road and track performance, a more universal car."
Apart from that, the company will now focus on using more lightweight materials for its production in the future. Reports suggest that the new Speedtail, as well as the upgraded P1, will pave the path for new and better technology that would later be seen in the company's upcoming models.
