The Mercedes-Benz GLB has been spied testing multiple times already. This recent batch of spy shots shows an entry-level AMG mule on test runs.
The Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 was spotted recently, with one stand-out feature that is conspicuously different than the GLB variant. It sits noticeably lower than its garden-variety sibling, pointing to a sport-tuned suspension. It sits so low on its wheels that it appears to have less ground clearance than one of the hatchbacks in the background.
The AMG mule also appears to have larger alloys wrapping around a high-performance braking system with cross-drilled rotors. A temporary dual exhaust system is also visible, exiting through the cutouts in the bumper. Major styling changes are not apparent, but we can expect AMG to give the GLB its signature cabin treatment. Expect the GLB 35 to also sport AMG-exclusive displays for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.
Mercedes-AMG will most certainly plonk the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor of the A35 hot hatch into the GLB. The four-pot engine makes 301hp and 400Nm, making for a potent powertrain. AMG might hook up the engine to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a performance-tuned all-wheel-drive system.
Performance figures are, of course, not out yet, but seeing as the A35 can sprint to the ton in 4.7 seconds, the expectedly heavier GLB will be slightly slower. Both AMGs will share a similar electronically limited top speed of 250kph though.
Once the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 is out, it will play the field against compact crossovers like the BMW X2 M, Porsche Macan, Audi SQ2, and so on. Though the three rivals named against the AMG put down more power, bear in mind that Mercedes-AMG has another blown four-pot motor in the wings that powers the A45 hatchback. If the company were to place the hotter motor under the GLB's hood, we would be looking at a real screamer of a crossover!
