Rolls-Royce announced in 2015 that it would be crafting an all-new, high-bodied car that would redefine luxury travel by making it "Effortless, Everywhere." Earlier this week, the company revealed that the name 'Cullinan' has indeed been chosen for the new car.
Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötv¶s commented on the occasion, "The name Cullinan has been hiding in plain sight since we revealed it as the project name some years ago. ” Cullinan is the largest diamond ever found on this earth, mined from South Africa's Magaliesberg Mountains. At 3,106 carats, this diamond was cleaved into nine pieces, some of which are part of the British Crown Jewels. The Cullinan Diamond is the biggest of them all, and the new high-sided Rolls-Royce aspires to be just that. What remains to be seen is how well the car will wear the name.
Like the diamond itself, the story of the Rolls is one of a pursuit of perfection. The Cullinan has been rigorously tested in some of the most hostile terrains on the planet. The deserts of Middle East and Africa, the Arctic Circle, the Scottish Highlands, canyons of America - The Cullinan has seen them all. Craftsmen, artisans, and engineers of the House of Rolls-Royce have created polished, shaped and honed this new product, much like the diamond it is named after.
“We were inspired by the epic processes, over many millennia, which went into the creation of the Cullinan Diamond. The name embodies the many facets of our new motor-car's promise. It speaks of endurance and absolute solidity in the face of the greatest pressures; it tells of rarity and preciousness and it alludes to the pioneering, adventurous spirit of The Hon. Charles Rolls and the engineering innovation of Sir Henry Royce; and, of course, it speaks of absolute luxury, wherever you venture in the world” continued Müller-Ötv¶s.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the second vehicle that has the company's all-new proprietary aluminium spaceframe "Architecture of Luxury" underpinning it. Expect the production car to surface later this year, as a 2019 model.
