Nissan's commitment to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in the workplace is underscored by its recent signing of the UN Women's Empowerment Principles. These principles, established by UN Women and the UN Global Compact, provide guidance to businesses on advancing gender equality and empowering women not only within the workplace but also in the marketplace and the broader community.

Nissan Motor Corporation has a longstanding history of supporting initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for women's advancement in an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated. These initiatives include specific programs for developing female talent, such as the Woman Leadership Program, and a framework designed to assist employees in balancing their work responsibilities with childcare, nursing care, and other activities.

As a result of these efforts, the percentage of female managers at Nissan globally has seen significant growth, increasing from 6.7 percent in 2008 to 15.5 percent as of March 2023. In Japan, where the manufacturing industry has historically had low female representation in management roles, Nissan stands out with women comprising 10.4 percent of its management, compared to an industry average of just 5.1 percent for companies with 1,000 or more employees.

Nissan's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment goes beyond mere statistics. The company is determined to create a workplace where all individuals feel valued and respected for their unique contributions. To achieve this goal, Nissan plans to expand its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, ensuring that every employee is supported and encouraged to communicate openly. The ultimate aim is for Nissan to become a truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive company, where everyone can bring their best and most authentic selves to work. This commitment reflects not only Nissan's dedication to its employees but also its broader mission to be a responsible corporate citizen contributing to positive societal change.

A word from Nissan Officials

Makoto Uchida, President and CEO of Nissan said, “Implementing the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles will provide further momentum to the work Nissan has done to champion women in the workplace. It will help us become as equitable and inclusive as we are diverse. Nissan has a moral responsibility to reflect the world we want to live in, driving innovation to enrich people’s lives by combining our diverse insights and understanding. We continue to hold ourselves accountable and invest in endeavours that will benefit future generations. This signing shows our commitment.”
