At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, Nissan made waves with the unveiling of the all-electric R32 GT-R EV. A bold reimagination of one of the most iconic cars in automotive history, this groundbreaking conversion merges the timeless appeal of the R32 GT-R with cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) technology. This project, a brainchild of passionate Nissan engineers, showcases the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability while preserving the spirit of a true driving legend.

A Passion Project Turned Reality

The R32 GT-R EV is the result of a dedicated team of Nissan enthusiasts in Japan, spearheaded by Ryozo Hiraku, a seasoned EV powertrain engineer and a former R32 Skyline owner. Hiraku envisioned an electric transformation of the R32 that would ensure its longevity and relevance for future generations. “I wondered if 30 years from now—in 2055 or beyond—owners of this incredible machine could still buy gasoline and enjoy driving it. I saw merit in using electrical and digital technology to replicate the appeal of the R32 GT-R so future generations could experience it,” Hiraku explained.

Electrifying Performance

Under the hood, the R32 EV replaces the legendary 2.6-litre twin-turbocharged RB26DETT engine with a pair of 160kW electric motors, delivering up to 340Nm of torque each. A 62kWh battery, sourced from the LEAF NISMO RC02, powers the motors. Despite the added weight of 370kg from the battery and electric components, the team meticulously tuned the power and torque output to mirror the original R32’s celebrated performance.

Innovations in Driving Dynamics

To maintain the iconic R32’s dynamic handling, the team integrated a modernised twin motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system. This new setup, enhanced with advanced sensors and instantaneous torque distribution, surpasses the precision of the original ATTESA E-TS system. Additionally, a NISMO Sports suspension kit with Öhlins dampers ensures optimal handling and minimised body roll, even with the EV components’ added weight.

Preserving the R32’s Soul

In a nod to the R32’s heritage, the team has gone to great lengths to retain the visceral driving experience that enthusiasts cherish. The R32 EV features paddle shift functionality and a unique cabin sound system that replicates the distinctive RB26DETT engine note. To simulate the sensation of gear shifts, engineers programmed a “shift shock” effect, delivering the tactile feedback of a manual transmission.

A Modern Take on a Classic Design

While maintaining its original Gun Grey Metallic finish, the R32 EV includes subtle updates that blend seamlessly with its classic design. Upgraded R35 GT-R brakes, larger 18-inch wheels, and custom Recaro seats enhance both safety and comfort. Inside, high-resolution digital screens replace the traditional gauges, offering a modern interface while preserving the R32’s nostalgic aesthetic.

Pioneering the Future

Though Nissan currently has no plans to commercialise the R32 EV or offer conversion kits, the project serves as a testbed for advancing EV technology and exploring the potential of electrifying classic cars. According to Nissan’s master test driver Hiroyoshi Kato, who played a key role in the original R32’s development, the EV’s driving dynamics are a remarkable achievement.

As the automotive industry continues to shift towards sustainability, the R32 GT-R EV exemplifies how innovation and heritage can coexist. This ambitious project not only honours the legacy of the R32 but also paves the way for a future where classic cars can thrive in an electric era.
