Ferrari's recent announcement implementing a major expansion in its lineup has stated its plans of producing more than just high-performance cars. The company at a recent event confirmed its plans of entering into the SUV segment.
Ferrari's top executives believe that Ferrari's first offering into the SUV segment will be the fastest among its rivals which currently consists of Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus ad the upcoming Rolls Royce Cullinan.
This plan falls in line with what Ferrari's ex-CEO Sergio Marchionne had planned for the company. He also had promised a new SUV, as the company aimed at expanding its lineup, by 2020. However, current CEO of Ferrari Louis Carey Camilleri has pushed the project by two years to 2022.
Further details regarding Ferrari's first high-seater was revealed at the company's Capital Markets day in Italy. The new Ferrari SUV, named as project Purosange, will find its spot in the GT lineup and will be based on a new front-mid-engined platform that will also support a plug-in hybrid option.
Currently, Lamborghini's Urus tops the list of fastest SUVs with its 641bhp twin-turbo V8 engine, capable of a 0-100kph lunge in 3.6s and a top speed of 304kph.
Reports suggest that the upcoming Ferrari Utility Vehicle (FUV), as the company calls it, could be a part of the company's upcoming five-year plan that is designed to boost its sales beyond the company's limit if 10,000 cars per year.
The company's intention behind the self-imposed limit is not only to preserve the exclusivity of the brand but also to tackle stringent emission norms in some of the major markets.
Ahead of his death in July, Marchionne had said that the Italian stallion would not be creating an SUV that would share a similar mould with the ones that are sold in the market and that 'you have to shoot me first' if it did.
