Italian auto premiere Ferrari dropped a majority of its purists' jaws after announcing its entry into the SUV segment in the near future. However, the surprises did not end there.
Ferrari announced the inception of a new range of special edition vehicles in its lineup known as 'Icona' which will celebrate some of the Italian manufacturer's most popular models.
The two new additions to the 'Icona' range are the Monza SP1 and Sp2. The car is made on the basis of Ferrari's racing Barchettas of the 1950s, specifically the 750 Monza and 850 Monza. The limited edition horse-bearing cars will be sold to the company's most loyal customers at a price likely to be over 3 million pounds.
Both the new models will be street legal with the SP1 being a single-seater and the SP2 will allow a passenger seat to be fit. With a carbon fibre body, the build of the car sports a unique design with no roof or windscreen.
To compensate the lack of a windscreen, the company claims that both the models will sport the new 'Virtual Wind Shield', which sits ahead of the steering wheel and manipulates airflow around the drivers and passengers.
Under the hood, both the models carry the 812 Superfast's V12 engine which delivers 789hp of power and 714Nm torque with a claimed top speed of 296kph.
This news comes along with the company's announcement about its much-awaited entry into the SUV segment which the company claims will hit the showrooms by 2022. Named as project Purosange, the 'Ferrari Utility Vehicle', is expected to surpass the output figures of all its rivals.
The company is planning to launch at least 15 new models by 2022 which, it claims, will also sport electric hybrids. This also implies that Ferrari is ready to surpass its self-imposed limit of 10,000 units per year which was intended to not only preserve the exclusivity of the brand but also to tackle stringent emission norms in some of the major markets.
