Audi is going all-out on electric power with three models already planned for production. The first of these is the e-Tron midsize crossover followed by the GT four-door. Recently, Audi also confirmed the third of its e-Tron lineup in the form of a compact SUV.
Volkswagen's MEB platform is being put to good use throughout the firm's portfolio of brands. VW is itself using it for its ID family of EVs. Audi is leveraging the modular and scalable platform for its compact electric SUV that will sit between the Q2 and Q3 in size.
The compact e-SUV could become Audi's bestseller upon launch thanks to being the most affordable EV in its lineup. It will occupy the space a rung below the recently launched e-Tron SUV, alongside the upcoming e-Tron Sportback and the e-Tron GT. Audi recently previewed the e-Tron GT in concept form, taking the battle to Tesla with the stylish electric four-door GT.
Audi design boss Marc Lichte confirmed to Autocar that some of the design details of the flagship e-Tron GT will make their way to the compact SUV. These include the shoulder line, inverted grille, and air intakes among others.
The German carmaker is employing multiple platforms for its electric cars. The e-Tron and e-Tron Sportback sit on Audi's longitudinal modular platform called MLB. The e-Tron GT shares its underpinnings named J1 with the Porsche Taycan's. Using the MEB platform for its compact e-SUV will ensure that Audi can price it more affordably than its bigger offerings. Currently, many of VW's brands like SEAT, Skoda are also developing electric cars that will use the MEB platforms.
We have news of three Audi electric cars as of yet. The firm has plans to put nine more EVs on the road, right from a hatchback to a full-blown sports car.
