Pininfarina is making big strides in the electric automotive industry and has recently declared that a new battery-powered hypercar is indeed being indigenously developed at its studio.
Pininfarina has kickstarted its own automobile production arm called Pininfarina Automobili, which is currently developing an electric hypercar. This will be the firm's first indigenous product, and what a product at that. The hypercar is touted to clock the 0-100 kph run under two seconds, with a projected top speed north of 400 kph.
Automobili Pininfarina first announced the project during the inaugural race of the 2018 Formula E in Rome at a press conference. Here it was also revealed that in addition to the eye-watering acceleration and top speed figures, the PF0 (as it is called internally) will also cross 300 kph within twelve seconds, a feat achieved only by the Koenigsegg Regera till date. It's not all blistering pace with the PF0, as the car is capable of covering almost 500 km on a full charge with a steady throttle foot.
When it comes to design, the PF0 will look good. Not just because all hypercars are supposed to be so, but because the project is in the hands one of the most reputed Italian design houses. Pininfarina is 78 years old and has been designing spectacular cars for clients like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, General Motors, Fiat, Lancia and many more. When a team as brilliant as the one who designed cars like the Ferrari 458, Alfa Giulietta, Cadillac Eldorado Brougham and the likes get to design and develop an entire car in-house, the project has to hold a certain amount of pride.
Corporate parent Mahindra & Mahindra is the driving force behind the Pininfarina hypercar project with its expertise in electric cars gained from multiple seasons spent in the Formula E as well as sizeable cash reserves. The PF0 is expected to show its form sometime in 2019, with a launch and delivery timeline set tentatively in 2020. Pininfarina will preview the hypercar to a select audience and is looking to price it at a cool $2.47 million a pop. If the PF0 project receives a good response from the consumers, Automobili Pininfarina will then expand its EV lineup to include SUVs as well.
