The Flying Spur nameplate has now been around since 2005, and is currently in its third generation. The luxury British Marque, which was founded in 1919, recently celebrated its hundredth birthday. So, as a gift to themselves, Bentley pulled the wraps off the all-new 2020 Flying Spur. The Flying Spur is aimed at affluent buyers who want a luxury limo with rich heritage, but does it so without sacrificing on performance or modern technology. It will compete against the likes of the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Maserati Quattroporte, and Jaguar XJR.
The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur utilises an all-new platform, akin to the one found in the new Continental GT. The exterior design has been thoroughly revamped and now looks spot-on for a large, luxurious limo. Bentley's new design philosophy, which made heads turn with the updated Continental GT, has now been applied to the 2020 Flying Spur as well. The all-aluminium bodywork looks exquisite, almost flawless, and features strong character lines, sensual contours and bold stylistic cues all over. Up front, the updated design sports a massive grille, topped by an electronically-actuated and illuminated 'Flying B' mascot (a first in a modern Bentley), LED matrix headlamps with cut-crystal effect and chrome sleeves, intimidating and sporty bumper, and a vast bonnet which incorporates a chrome strip that runs right along its centre.
Moving on, the large 22-inch alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, distinctive 'Flying B' style vents on the fenders, and svelte rear haunches of the new Flying Spur all come together rather well. The minimalistic yet pleasing rear features the limo's full-LED tail lamps with chrome surrounds, well-integrated bumper with unique chrome detailing, and elliptical dual exhaust outlets. Overall, the new Flying Spur's design exudes sophistication and class, and does so quite effortlessly. The new model is touch larger than before, measuring in at 5,316mm in length, 1,987mm in width, and 1,484mm in height. Meanwhile, Bentley has also extended the wheelbase for extra rear space - now at 3,194mm.
To move its 2.4-tonne bulk, the 2020 Flying Spur needs a lot of muscle. So, lurking under the bonnet is an absolute beast of a motor: it's a twin-turbocharged, 6.0-litre W12 with 626hp and 900Nm of shove. The Flying Spur drives all four corners using Bentley's Active All-Wheel Drive system, while an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission handles the shifting of the cogs. For optimum handling and high-speed stability, there's adaptive air suspension which works on a 48-volt electronic architecture, thus allowing for quicker and more precise body control. So, the performance numbers: the Bentley Flying Spur can scoot from naught to 100 km/h in an impressive 3.8 seconds. Meanwhile, maximum velocity is 333 km/h - making this luxury limo faster than even some supercars.
However, if it has to compete with some of its equally capable rivals, brisk performance alone won't pass muster. However, Bentley has already thought of that. The new Flying Spur is bristling with top-notch luxury amenities and an extensive arsenal of modern technologies. The lavishly appointed cabin gets quilted leather seats with three-dimensional diamond quilted leather door inserts, beautiful wood veneer, posh aluminium controls and surfaces, and above all, excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail.
As for its tech goodies, the 2020 Flying Spur has adaptive cruise control, adaptive exhausts, adaptive headlights, four-wheel steering, night vision, panoramic sunroof, heated, ventilated and massaging seats, mood lighting, Alcantara headlining, surround-view camera system, rotating centre console with a 12.3-inch touch-infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and live navigation, and a 19-speaker Naim premium audio system. Some of the standard safety nannies of the new Flying Spur include anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, hill assist, and a whole gamut of other vital safety tech. The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur will make its way to the GCC, likely by the end of 2019
