BMW Working On A 2-series Based GranCoupe

One of the projects that BMW is currently working on is a four-door GranCoupe that is supposedly based on BMW’s 2-series. The new car would be an entry-level product and would stand in between the BMW 1-series sedan and 3-series.

A few spy pictures of the prototype have emerged on the Internet earlier this week. Based on those, Autobild has come up with their own rendering of the new model. The rendering looks outstanding and if BMW has narrowed it down to something like this, it’d be one amazing looking car. According to Autobild’s rendering, the front end of the GranCoupe would have aesthetics inspired from the legendary BMW 2002.

It is being reckoned that the 2-series based GranCoupe would be based on the FWD UKL platform. This platform would also give the base for the future 2-series Coupe and Cabrio. The overall length of this new model would be somewhere similar to that of the current generation 2-series Gran Tourer, which is around 4.5m long.

If we talk about the variants of the new 2-series GranCoupe, we can expect it to be available in a 3-cylinder, 1.5l model and a 4-cylinder, 2.0l model. The top end variant of the line-up could be powered by the 2.0l turbo engine which dishes out around 252hp; the M35i one. Since this model is expected to lie in between the BMW 1-series sedan and 3-series, a 6-cylinder engine variant is out of the equation. However, BMW hasn’t released any information about any specifications of the car.

It’s still very early to say how successful would the 2-series GranCoupe be in attracting buyers. BMW is planning to launch it in 2020 and it would compete against the new generation Mercedes CLA then.
