Mitsubishi’s new Engelberg Tourer Concept gets its name from a Swiss ski resort, the road to which is said to be popular for its off-piste routes and backcountry roads. Now that the name is out of the way, let’s dive into its specs.

In a time when SUVs are being built for the city, Mitsubishi wants you to get muddy. The chunky arches and roof box-mounted spotlights speak the same language. More than just a concept that could very well be pushed into production, the Engelberg features a system that, according to Mitsubishi, will succeed the current Outlander PHEV system.

Mitsubishi will couple the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to a 20kWh battery pack underneath the floor. The same will supply power to two electric motors in the front and rear. It is expected to run 70km on pure electricity with a maximum combined range of 700km.

The interesting thing, however, is the platform on which the SUV is based on. Mitsubishi has built the SUV on a chassis tech inspired by the Lancer Evolution hot saloons which include an active yaw control system and advanced torque-split function ensuring stability in all conditions. More importantly, the same tech will make its way into the brand’s future models.

In addition to the Engelberg, Mitsubishi also showcased a home charging system that it calls the Dendo Drive House (DDH). We are said that the system uses a bi-directional charger, solar panels and a battery that is designed to be integrated with your house electric systems. It will allow your EV or PHEV to be charged via solar panels.

Ahead of this, the long-struggling Japanese brand has unveiled a slew of concepts which sadly didn’t make its way to production. However, its move to replace the Outlander’s successful PHEV system might reflect the confidence in its potential.
