The power column is the argument in miniature. The GT3 RS is seventh with 518 hp. Of the six cars above it, four make more than 700 and two make over a thousand. How the GT3 RS Lost the Crown
In October 2022 the 992.1 GT3 RS ran 6:49.328 and the argument was effectively over. It was not the fastest thing ever to lap the Nordschleife, but it was the fastest car you could order, drive home and take back next weekend. Four years later it is seventh, and the identity of the cars in front is the interesting part.
One is a hybrid hypercar. The AMG One's 6:29.090 came from a Formula 1 power unit in a road car, built in a run of 275. It is a different category of object and a different price, and losing to it costs the GT3 RS nothing.
Two are American, and both use aerodynamics Porsche does not. The Mustang GTD Competition's 6:40.835 and the Corvette ZR1X's 6:49.275 come from cars with active aero and, in the Ford's case, a DRS-style rear wing and hydraulically adjustable suspension. The Mustang did it on street-legal tyres and without all-wheel drive, against a 1,250-horsepower hybrid Corvette that had both. These are not muscle cars that got lucky on a straight; they are aerodynamic answers to a lap that is 73 per cent full throttle.
And two are Porsches wearing a Manthey Kit. This is the part that deserves the most thought. The 992.1 GT3 RS with the Manthey Kit runs 6:45.389, almost four seconds inside the standard car, from the same engine and the same chassis. The kit adds an aero package generating over a tonne of downforce at 285 km/h with, by Manthey's account, no drag penalty, plus semi-active suspension.
So the GT3 RS did not lose its crown to a rival Porsche has no answer to. It lost it partly to Porsche's own answer, sold as an option.
Here is the opinion. The lap chart is telling you that the era when a naturally aspirated, mechanically pure track special could top it has ended, and it ended on aerodynamics rather than on power. Every car above the standard GT3 RS is there because of downforce, electrification, or both. Porsche's response has been to keep the 4.0-litre flat-six naturally aspirated and to sell the downforce separately.
That is a defensible engineering position and a real strategic choice, not a failure. A GT3 RS is still a car built to be driven by an owner on a Sunday rather than by a development driver on a Tuesday, and it is still fourth fastest among cars anyone can buy in road-legal form. But the headline number is no longer Porsche's, and it will not be again by doing more of the same. The Manthey Kit is Porsche telling you exactly what it would take, and charging for it.
What it means for Porsche is narrower than it looks. The company has spent thirty years using the Nordschleife as its proof of concept, and it now competes there against cars whose aero budgets are larger and whose engineering briefs are looser. The 919 Evo showed Porsche can put any number on the board it wants when the rules are removed. The GT3 RS shows what the same company does when the rules are that the car has to be sold to the public with a warranty and a number plate. Those are two different products, and the second one is the harder problem.
