Citing 'overwhelming' demand from the customers, Ford has ramped up its production by 350 models. The additional GTs will be produced in two further years, the company said in a statement.
Interested buyers of the upcoming GT supercars has been provided with a span of one month starting from November 8 to submit their applications on FordGT.com. However, the booking is currently restricted to the markets of UK, Germany and America.
The company states that the current demand ousts the supply capacities by six-to-one and of the 1350 GTs that will now be produced around 13 per cent are bound for Europe.
The Ford GT is built with hand by vehicle specialists of Multimatic at its factory in Markham, Canada. The company has promised a delivery of 250 GTs per year to customers and initially manufactured 1000 vehicles.
The GT is a heritage moniker in the company's lineup. The car carries a mid-mounted 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 engine that delivers 647bhp of power. The company claims that the car is capable of reaching triple-digit speeds in about 2.8 seconds with a top speed of close to 347kph.
“The response to our Ford GT has been unprecedented, with initial demand outstripping supply by more than six-to-one,” said Hermann Salenbauch, Ford Performance director. “By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we're able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers.”
Earlier this month, the company hit a snag after close to 190 models of the GT had to be recalled due to hydraulic fluid leak. The company had stated that the leak was from the valves under the rear wing block of the car which is built by Multimatic.
The fluid leak could pose a serious safety hazard, leading to a fire in-case if it reaches the exhaust system. By far, the company stated that one fire was reported in Germany as a result of the defect. However, no deaths or injuries were followed. The affected model has been found out to be manufactured between December 20, 2016, and July 31, 2018.
