FIVE-POINT COMPARO: MERCEDES-AMG G63 VS RANGE ROVER SPORT

CarPrices.ae Team / Posted On - August 23rd 2022

UAE has always taken a liking to powerful SUVs with a commanding road presence. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 and 2019 Range Rover Sport fit the bill perfectly in both regards. Here's a quick look at how these two SUVs stack up against each other in this five-point comparo.

Design

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 has modern performance SUV underpinnings beneath a forty-year-old design. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class made its debut in 1979 and has gone on to earn a massive cult following in its name. The German automaker has played it safe with this SUV and not touched its iconic design while bringing the interiors to modern luxury standards. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
On the other hand, Land Rover has consistently upped the ante with each generation of the Range Rover, raising it from a luxurious Land Rover SUV to an off-road capable icon of British luxury. You cannot instantly point out a Range Rover Sport from its more luxurious sibling that goes without the 'Sport' badge, but the trim we are talking about here is more practical and versatile.
Just point the Range Rover Sport's hood where you want to go. It will make sure you get there.

Safety

Although Mercedes-Benz has packed the G63 to its gills with the latest safety technology, the SUV still wears an old design that is not exactly the safest out there. However, you benefit from the presence of an advanced safety web of systems like ABS, traction control, tyre pressure sensors, and a total of 10 airbags. Its commanding road presence certainly helps in lesser mortals keeping away from you on the road.
When it comes to safety, the 2019 Range Rover Sport ticks almost all imaginable boxes. You get ABS, traction control, eight airbags, tyre pressure sensors, and an assortment of warning and predictive systems that help you stay alert of potential hazards anywhere around the car. And you can be sure this SUV can keep you safe out in the middle of nowhere as well with its proven off-road capabilities.

Infotainment

You can't really go wrong in this department. One car is from a German manufacturer, while the other comes from a British carmaker. For the price and position they occupy in the motoring world, they offer similarly modern infotainment options.
Sumptuous interiors paired with a boxy, classic body. The Mercedes-AMG isn't just a poser.
There is a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen sitting atop the Mercedes-AMG G63's dashboard, from where you can access the company's proprietary COMAND control system. There is no talk of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) making it to the G63, but we are ever hopeful.
The 2019 Range Rover Sport gets a smaller 10-inch infotainment unit that interestingly has a dual-vision display. The passenger and driver can both set what they want to see on the screen without having to switch displays. Loaded with Land Rover's Touch Pro Duo, the Range Rover Sport allows you to control multiple functions from the screen.

Performance

This is where it gets difficult to choose between the two big SUVs, for both of them are solid cars in terms of performance. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 gets a 5.5-litre biturbo V8 that puts down 571hp and a healthy 760Nm. It cracks the ton in a scant 5.4 seconds and tops out at 230kph. Power is fed to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. There is just no replacement for displacement.
The Range Rover Sport SVR has some serious muscle.
The base 2019 Range Rover Sport starts with a 3.0-litre V6 putting down 340hp, but to go against the legendary G-Wagen, you need an equally robust engine as the German. So Land Rover equipped a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 to the top-spec Range Rover Sport SVR. This engine is good for 560hp and 700Nm. Despite having lesser power and torque, the SVR sprints to the ton in 4.7 seconds and clocks a higher top speed than the Mercedes G63 AMG at 280kph.

Pricing/Availability

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 in the UAE costs AED 699,950. The 2019 Range Rover Sport starts from AED 373,000 for the SE trim, going all the way to AED 625,000 for the full-spec SVR trim.
For more information on the G63, head to your nearest Gargash Enterprises Mercedes-Benz or Emirates Motor Company Mercedes-Benz dealership. Additional information on the Range Rover Sport can be had from visiting your nearest Al Tayer Motors Land Rover showroom.

Verdict

If you want your SUV to be a classic sleeper that looks like a century-old car but can really lay skid marks alongside the best of supercars, look no further than the G63 AMG.
However, if you want an SUV with elegant, contemporary looks that can take you across the world without breaking a sweat, you will take a liking to the Range Rover Sport.
The quintessential SUV in every regard.
