The Middle East is essentially a mid to large-sized SUV market and most large SUVs have come from North America. And it’s not just the American brands that have produced specific models for the world’s second largest market.
Even Europe-biased brands like Germany’s Volkswagen has realized the specific fine points of the large SUV market and has designed and built in America a 3-row 7-seater to suit American tastes slotted above the Touareg crossover.
To be absolutely sure that they were on the right path, VW began testing waters way back in 2013 with the Cross Coupe GTE concept and followed it up with several lifestyle-oriented ideas like the fastback Crossblue Coupe concept.
The Volkswagen Teramont/Atlas project was greenlighted in 2016 and production was based on the company’s modular MQB platform. In its design, the production model retains several features of the Cross Coupe GTE concept like the strong character lines on sheetmetal.
The VW Teramont as not only competes well with rivals in terms of value – specifically Asian brands like Toyota and Mazda, besides GM, Ford and Dodge and it has the kind of passenger space large Middle East families typically shop for in a family-hauling crossover.
Space is one of the SUV’s biggest strengths. It has plenty of room and enough second-row seat width for three adults across. Also the third row will accommodate young adults with usable cargo space to spare. The 1,967kg SUV is offered in the region with a 3.6-litre V6 offering 276hp and 361NM of torque when mated to 8-speed transmission. AWD (VW 4motion) is available which ensures good on road and reasonable beach-duties and light off-roading.
Like most SUV models in the line-up, the crossover features an interior design that’s both simple and sophisticated. Even entry-level models have easy-to-read gauges, intuitive controls and above-average quality materials. The top-end SEL and SEL Premium offer plenty of technology features as well.
VW has paid attention to ensure that added gadgetry doesn’t make the cabin complicated to operate. Key safety systems such as automatic emergency braking along with convenience features including a power-operated liftgate and remote start.
Base models of the Volkswagen Teramont get cloth upholstry, a bench seat in the second row, LED headlights and dual-zone manual climate control along with typical features such as power mirrors, a rearview camera and cruise control. There’s Middle specced variants get a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen interface that offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity.
Top-of-the-line models get leather upholstery, push-button start, automatic headlights, a power driver seat, heated front seats, rear sunshades, a blind-spot monitoring system, a larger 8-inch touchscreen interface and the option of captain’s chairs in the second row.
Panaromic sunroof, power-adjustable front passenger seats, park distance control and two available options: black 20-inch wheels and the R-Line appearance package. Exclusive features available include digital cockpit, LED taillights.
