Toyota’s flagship Land Cruiser is the grand daddy of the full size SUVs and has always been popular and has definitely carved a niche for itself in the market. Just thinking of the Land Cruiser would bring up images of it dune-bashing across the desert. This rugged and extremely capable machine received a facelift in 2015 with its huge chrome slapped grill, adding to its imposing presence, but the headlamps and front bumpers try to look too modern, which doesn’t blend too well with the traditional, yet handsome design of the sides and the rear.
The interiors look and feel premium and the choice of materials would probably not look out of place on a Lexus. The modern looking interior has no shortage for space, thanks to its generous exterior proportions. However, due to the ladder on frame construction, the floor is tall, and that compromises the thigh support a bit.
Choice of engines on offer include – 4.0L V6 VVT-i which is good enough for 271HP and 385NM of torque which is coupled with a 5-speed AT, a 4.6L V8 with dual VVT-i that puts out 304HP and 439NM of torque and is mated to a 6-speed AT, and a range-topping humungous 5.7L V8 with dual VVT-i that dishes out an impressive 362HP and a mind numbing 530NM of torque and gets an 8-speed AT to handle all that torque
Though the numbers look sports-car impressive, the performance is not earth shattering, as the weight of this large SUV sort of balances it out. However, the Land Cruiser’s capabilities off-road cannot be challenged. It is the king when it comes to off-road prowess and stomps through practically any terrain one can put underneath it. Even on the highways, the Land Cruiser remains calm, composed and refined, making it a really capable machine on or off the road.
The 4.0L variant comes in EXR and GXR variants, while the 4.0L and 5.7L V8 engines are offered in EXR, GXR and VXR variants. Even the entry level variant gets adequate safety features like ABS, dual airbags, ESP, Active traction control, tyre pressure warning, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and rear view camera. EXR gets hill assist control, crawl control, ISO-fix and turn assist function. GXR gets curtain and side airbags, while the flagship VXR gets a host of other advanced smart safety features.
The Toyota Land Cruiser has always been a brilliant flagship SUV, and the latest model adds on to its strong points and further extends the dominance of the Land Cruoser in its segment.
