The previous generation Fortuner was getting a little too long in the tooth, and when Toyota replaced the aging SUV with the all new Fortuner in 2016, it wasn’t a moment too soon. The all-new Fortuner, much more modern today, still retains the familiar Fortuner profile. With the huge ‘T’ logo and slender headlamps complete with LED details and the large bumper give the Fortuner an imposing presence. The side looks modern and contemporary, a big departure from the model it replaces. The rear is again complete with LED detailing in the tail lights and makes the SUV look modern and tough. However, true-blue SUV people might find the new design more like a crossover, while the previous model was butch and tough looking off-roader.
The interiors are a huge step up, from the old model and feels luxurious, befitting a model of its class now. The choice of materials and textures used too ooze quality and leave little to complain. And the car is also a little more spacious than earlier – seating 7 people in relative comfort. Being a traditional SUV with ladder-on-frame construction, it has an almost indestructible feel to it, and the ride quality is really absorbent. This makes traveling in the Fortuner a pleasant affair.
The Fortuner is offered in three trims, the base EXR variant is powered by a 2.7L 4 cylinder engine that puts out 164HP and 244NM of torque. This is a bare-bones variant with just about enough features to justify its asking price. While the other two variants – GXR and VXR come with a 4.0L V6 that makes 235HP and an impressive 376NM of torque. These variants are much better equipped too, with keyless entry, push start, touch-screen audio with navigation support, Automatic climate control, differential lock for better off-road capability and a sporty growl from the V6 as standard. All three variants come equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Safety however stands as tall as the SUV itself, as Toyota has packed ABS with EBD & BA, Dual front airbags & a driver knee airbag too, rear parking sensors (reverse camera on the GXR & VXR) cruise control, ESP, ISO-fox for child seats and tyre pressure monitoring too as standard on the Fortuner.
