The Corolla has been the Japanese samurai who has been fighting in the automotive market for a very long time now. The current car is a facelifted version of the latest generation car that was launched in 2014. The 2017 model looks sleek, futuristic and elegant and definitely makes a mark, as one of the best looking Corollas that was ever made. The headlamps look smart (especially on the top of the line trim that comes with LED headlamps) and the rear tail lamps get LED illumination as standard now, make the car looks sophisticated.
The interiors in comparison have received a very minor refresh, but with the black and beige combination along with the piano black finishes to the center console really impart a luxurious feel. Space was always one of the strong points for the Corolla, and the latest iteration is no exception. The ride quality of the car is really sorted too, providing a cushy ride. This however translates to a soft-setup thus making the Corolla, not the best choice for an enthusiastic driver.
Powertrain options include a tried and tested 1.6L engine which is good for 121HP and 154NM of torque, or a much more energetic 2.0L VVT-i , with 143HP and an impressive 187NM of torque. Both these engines are coupled to CVT transmissions, which Toyota calls –Multi Drive 7S, as it can simulate a 7-Speed AT transmission using 7 CVT steps. Both these engines are on par for the course, considering that the Corolla is not aiming to please the enthusiasts anyway.
The Corolla 1.6 can be had in S, SE or SE+ trims. While the more powerful 2.0L engine can be ordered in SE, SE+ or Limited trims. The safety kit however, is standard and it comes with Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD & Brake assist, ESP, ISO-fix for mounting child seats and rear parking sensors. Toyota missed an opportunity here by not offering curtain airbags, which could have given the Corolla a strong edge over its competitors. But with two engine options across four trims, consumers get a wide set of options to choose from. And no matter which trim one chooses, it would be hard to go wrong with this sensible and comfortable family saloon.
