Launched in 2013, the designed-in-America Toyota Avalon received a facelift last year, which saw its front face gain some aggression via a longer and wider grill. There is a thick layer of chrome surrounding the grill, and around the windows at the side, and on the rear bumper, and again a thick bar of chrome between the tail lights. All that chrome has been used to convey the luxo-barge intentions of the Avalon, and that is unmistakable.
The Avalon is a stretch, more comfortable and more spacious Camry and the interiors are truly limousine sized with ample space for all the passengers. The well designed and extremely well-appointed interiors provide a truly an extravagant experience. No matter how well the center console is designed, the focus is on the rear seats as they cocoon the occupants and keep them truly isolated from the noise and also the surface irregularities.
The 3.5L V6 engine with dual VVT-i offers a very respectable 273HP and 346NM of torque, and is coupled with a smooth shifting 6-speed transmission. But do not expect sports car performance from the Avalon, as the power is delivered in a refined and linear manner. Which is good, as the intention here is not to thrill the driver, but to enchant the rear seat occupants, and at that the Avalon excels.
The luxurious Avalon is available only in well-equipped variants, the SE+ and the Limited. And the standard safety kit includes ABS with EBD and brake assist, dual front airbags along with side, curtain and knee airbags, ESP, ISO-fix for child seats, front and rear parking sensors, tire pressure warning and even a back guide monitor. Even the lower priced SE+ variant comes equipped with leather seats, smart keyless entry with push start, engine remote start, sunroof, powered driver’s seat, cruise control, dual zone auto-AC, and an 11 speaker JBL power audio system with navigation support. The Limited variant though is true extravaganza, with premium leather seats, ventilated seats, 8 inch rear seat entertainment, LED headlamps with DRLs, etc.
Overall, The Avalon is far from being a driver’s car. But as a car to be ferried in, there are very few competitors that can match this 5m long extravagant Avalon.
