Tesla’s global CEO Elon Musk announced an entry into UAE market early in 2017. The model S, which is the more affordable of the two announced models, is a fully-electric luxury sedan. The model S made a global debut in 2012 and won the 2013 World Car of the Year title too. The one that has reached the shores of UAE is the facelifted model S, which made world premiere in 2016. The Model S is a large full-sized sedan with smooth flowing lines and a coherent design that would probably not offend anyone. The EV’s face with really thin slats for grills makes the car look very understated and inoffensive, yet the car does have a very proportionate and pleasing design.
The interior of the Model S is unique and tech-laden. The design however is a bit muted and the center console is dominated by the humungous 17-inch capacitive touch screen and the digital instrument console. There is veneer paneling and brushed aluminum finished bits to spruce up things, but the Model S is definitely no match for the other luxury sedans in the opulence and finish department.
There is no sporty V6 or V8 growl on this fully-electric Model S, instead there is only a very silent hiss from the electric motor. There is a huge battery pack beneath the platform of the car provides the power for the electric motors and thankfully the batteries support fast-charging and can provide a decent driving range in a matter of minutes – this greatly improves practicality aspect.
The S comes in two choices of battery capacity: 75 or 100 kilowatt hours. The smaller 75 kWh can be specified as rear-wheel drive or AWD, The rear-drive S uses a 270-kilowatt (362HP) motor. The AWD D models use two 193-kw (259HP) motors, mounted front and rear, one for each axle. The ultimate P100D model puts even more power to the rear, 375 kilowatts (503HP) – and Tesla claims this P100D can accelerate from 0-100kmph in just about 2.5 seconds, which is astonishing and to sports car standards. The handling too is really good, as the car corners with confidence, thanks to its low center of gravity, aided by the heavy batteries on the floor and the aluminum body panels.
All the models come with a long list of impressive standard equipment – ABS with EBD, 6-airbags, traction control, ESP, ISO-FIX for child seat anchors and active safety systems like collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking too. DRLs, reverse camera, push start button, 17inch touch screen with navigation, 12-way power adjusted seats with heating are all standard too. The Model S also offers the option of being ordered with semi-autonomous driving capability too, for the true experience of future!
