The king-size SUV offering from Mazda is the CX-9, the latest generation of this crossover SUV was launched towards the end of 2016. In terms of styling, this SUV is a bold departure from the previous iterations of the Mazda’s flagship SUV. The large Mazda signature grill with chrome border, along with the LED DRLs creates an aggressive face with a strong identity. The slender tail lamps and the chrome bar between them make the rear more of a crossover and less of a traditional SUV. With an imposing size and smart chrome detailing all around, the SUV looks rather butch.
The interiors are spacious, as suggested by the large exterior dimensions, however space on the third row seats on this 7-seater SUV is limited. Mazda has come a long way in terms of interior quality feel and the latest CX-9 stands testimony to that fact. The seats are large, supportive and plush, and there is plenty of soft touch plastics all around, making for a really premium cabin. The attention to detail and the fit & finish are top notch, upping the luxury quotient.
At the heart of the new CX-9 is a turbocharged 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine, which is good for 230HP and a really impressive 420Nm of torque. The torque being available from very low in the rev range makes the SUV really responsive to drive. The engine is smooth and refined, except in the upper rev range, where it begins to sound coarse. But even in the latest iteration, the CX-9 continues to be one of the best-driving full-size SUVs with its responsive steering and firm and well setup suspension. It still is no sports car, but considering its dimensions and the bulk it carries around, this is probably as good as it gets.
Being a flagship SUV, even the base GS variant gets ABS with EBD, dual front, side and curtain airbags, traction control, dynamic stability control, ISO-FIX child seat anchors and rear parking sensors with camera as standard. While the top of the line GT variant gets a host of active safety features as standard, like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, smart brake, lane keep assist making the CX-9 a really safe SUV.
