Ford’s EcoSport is a compact (tiny) SUV that was launched in 2014 here in the UAE. Though it features SUV styling cues, the EcoSport is still too compact by our standards and the car might not grab too many eyeballs. The car by itself has some neat styling details like the prominent front grill with neat chrome detailing, the sleek headlamps, and the smartly turned-out tail lights – which also hold a tail gate opening handle in disguise. The tail mounted spare wheel somewhat help to make up for the EcoSport’s lack of size.
The interiors are naturally not very spacious and the rear seats especially feel a bit cramped – a feeling that is further accentuated by the small-ish rear windows. The design is a bit dated too, with the cluttered, mobile phone-inspired center console and the hard plastics all around do not help its cause. However the front seats are supportive and provide good lateral support.
EcoSport is offered with a simple 1.5L 4-cylinder Ti-VCT engine that makes a modest 110.5HP and a rather uninspiring 140Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed DCT, which feels a bit slow in choosing the right gear. The engine is refined, but due to the lack of torque on the bottom end of the rev range, it doesn’t feel very fast and the transmission keeps hunting for the right gear to meet the power demand. The suspension is tuned for handling and this tiny SUV can take corners at speed, but the stiff suspension also results in a slightly harsh low speed ride quality.
The EcoSport is available in Ambiente, Trend and Titanium variants. All variants come with ABS, dual front airbags, ESP, hill-launch assist, tire pressure monitoring and ISOFIX child seat anchors. The Trend and Titanium variants also get side and curtain airbags along with cruise control making the EcoSport a very practical and friendly city-SUV.
