The BMW X5 was the brand’s first attempt in the mid-size luxury SUV segment which made its debut in 1999. It was impressive for the time as it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either manual or automatic transmission.
Current model X5s are manufactured in Greer, South Carolina at the Spartanburg BMW plant and modified for armoured, security versions in Mexico at the BMW de México Toluca plant
The new 2018 G05 X5 is the fourth and current generation X5 model and was unveiled online on June 6. It is mechanically based on the new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform shared with other BMW models. This arrangement helps it to grow and adapt lightweight construction technologies.
This new X5’s wheelbase is 42mm longer and 36mm longer overall. It’s also 19mm taller and 66mm wider. Compared to generation One 1999 model, it’s about 250mm longer.
The design language is evolutionary, but it’s unmistakable in profile and now it gets a humongous double kidney grille.
All models are xDrive all-wheel drive only, and initial engines include turbocharged 6-cylinder petrol, V8 petrol. Two turbocharged engines that are offered include a 300hp 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder, and a 455hp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.
The plug-in hybrid uses a smaller turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combine with an electric motor and 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Combined output stands at 308hp and 332 pound-feet of torque.
All engines are mated to 8-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the base gas-engine model, but upper trim levels come with all-wheel drive. AWD is optional for the base version.
For all-out performance, there’s the M version tuned to offer 567hp from the 4.4-litre V8 helping it to notch 0-100km/h in 4.7seconds.
The suspension combines a double-wishbone setup at the front and a five-link setup at the rear, and comes standard with a system called Dynamic Damper Control that uses pre-programmed options to change the stiffness of the car’s chassis.
BMW offers an array of safety technology options. All X5s now get rearview camera as standard but you pay extra for surround-view cameras and a head-up. Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control also are available.
The all-wheel drive (AWD) systemcan also get an electronically actuated rear diff lock as part of the M Sport and Off Road packages, the latter of which also gives you special displays and exterior view camera, separate pared-back throttle/gearbox/ESC mapping for slippery terrain, and underbody bash plates.
There’s also a new digital key that employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the vehicle to be locked and unlocked from your smartphone. All the driver has to do to open the vehicle is hold their smartphone up to the door handle.
Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the Qi wireless charging smartphone tray. The driver can share it with up to five other people, too.
Other notable features include the cluster of flush buttons surround the iDrive dial controlling things like driving modes, air suspension height, off-road settings and more.
