The Gran Coupé is just a 6 Series coupe styled car with four doors which finds its place just above the 4 Series in terms of size and performance. The model was introduced as an all-new addition to the line-up in 2012 for the first time.
The current 5-door is fastback styled and it has replaced the previous generation 5 Series Gran Turismo. However, it still has its umbilical connection with the 5 Series and mechanically, it is based on the 5-Series platform and hence a lot of tried and tested elements are familiar in the model.
The corporate powertrain is pretty standard in BMWs like the top of the line 640i’s turbocharged 340 hp 3.0-litre 6-cylinder, mated to an 8-speed automatic with paddle-shifters.
The main difference is that the Gran coupe sports a longer by 113mm wheelbase to help accommodate rear doors. However, this aspect doesn’t make it a simple cut and past transformation! Marrying the aggressive detailing of the two-door model’s lights and front grille with an elegant side profile and squat rear view highlight’s the design purity.
There are plenty of standalone elements like a full-width high level brake light positioned at the top of the rear window, chrome finishing around the front air intakes.
Engineered to be genuine sports cars, some of the sophisticated driving and comfort features offered include Dynamic Drive Control with four modes, namely comfort, normal, sport and sport +, as well as Comfort Start, Head-Up Display, Multi-Channel Audio System, Rear Seat Entertainment, Four-Zone Automatic Air Conditioning and BMW iDrive control. BMW ConnectedDrive also offers a unique range of driver-assist technology functions for enhanced comfort and safety. BMW claims the Gran Coupe is a 4+1 seater, but the rear middle seat offers zero legroom. Aside from the usual power accessories, leather upholstery, CD/MP3 stereo and other common items, available features include Surround View cameras, night vision with pedestrian recognition, Park Assistant, heads-up display, BlackBerry smart phone access via iDrive, Bluetooth interface for phone and e-mails, navigation, turning HID headlights, adaptive cruise control and run-flat tyres for 18-inch or 19-inch alloys. Bigger 20-inchers are optional.
Meanwhile, electronic parking brake, power-adjustable seats with optional ventilation, active steering, standard Drive Dynamic Control to choose from a range of pre-programmed suspension settings, Adaptive Drive for stability, multiple airbags, ABS, traction control, tyre-pressure monitor sign off the package.
Unlike the other two siblings with get 6-cylinder engines, there’s also available a four-cylinder in the 630i Gran Turismo which generates a respectable output of 258 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm between 1,550 and 4,400 rpm.
For easy driving the model is equipped with electromechanical steering system with speed-sensitive power assistance.
Several pre-set driving modes including ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT settings which modify the accelerator and steering mapping, the shift characteristics of the Steptronic transmission and the responses of the electronic dampers are available.
