The current seventh generation launched in 2017 is a good indicator of the success of the model series that has been soldiering since 1972. Mechanically, it is based on the same modular platform as used the 7 Series. The design direction for the model was overseen by Karim Habib, the then Head of Design BMW Automobiles.
Similar to the 3 Series, the 5-Series sedan has grown in dimensions. Compared to the outgoing model it is 36mm long at 4,935mm, 6mm wider at 1,868mm and 2mm taller at 1,466mm. Wheelbase has been kept at 2,975mm, which means there’s a gain of 7mm. The sleek and chiseled body lines also haved ensured that the car’s surface is slippery and that it can boast of a drag coefficient benchmark of Cd = 0.22. To enhance the popularity of the model, BMW offers 21 colours to choose from.
Powertrains for the region is a mix of four and six-cylinder set-ups. The new two-litre four-cylinder in-line forced-fed direct injection engine delivers 252hp and 350Nm of torque. 0 to 100km/h works out in 6.2 seconds and top speed is limited to 250 km/h.
The range-topping 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine for the time being will be offered in the 540i which adds extra punch of 34 hp to offer 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque (+50). Performance wise, 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 5.1 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
A plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 5-Series is sold as the 530e iPerformance. It uses BMW’s eDrive system and a four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine. The model can reach a top speed of 140km/h in all-electric mode and has an electric range of 45km.
As such the 5-Series is feature loaded and can now also be equipped with a revised – now electromechanical – Integral Active Steering system, with steering rear wheels for extra agility.
Comprehensive features offered in the new BMW 5-Series include Dynamic Drive Control with four modes (namely comfort, normal, sport and sport+), Comfort Start, Head-Up display, multi-channel audio system, rear seat entertainment, four-zone climate control and the famous BMW iDrive controller for navigation various functions. BMW ConnectedDrive offers a range of driver-assist technology functions for enhanced comfort and safety.
The BMW 5-Series comes with a Parking Assistant, an optional feature that facilitates the process of parking, as well as Active Cruise Control, Surround View and Rear View Camera, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition.
The stock model can also be decked up with an M appearance package that includes sports suspension and a body kit.
