One of the most successful volume models that the brand has introduced, the 3 Series since 1975 has become synonymous in the compact executive car segment as the successor to the legendary 2002 model. The seventh generation was introduced in 2018 at Paris Auto show and customer the deliveries are scheduled for early 2019 onwards.
Under development for five years it is the most advanced version yet. The incoming model sports a new design language and has clearer profile and precise lines. The car is also slightly bigger in all dimensions — at 4,709mm it is 76 mm longer, 16mm wider at 1,827mm) and just 1 mm taller. Supporting the car’s 41 mm longer wheelbase are increased track widths (front: + 43 mm, rear: + 21 mm) respectively.
BMW have used advanced construction technologies and despite enlarging the car’s dimensions have actually been able to reduce flab by as much as 55 kg and achieve drag coefficient of Cd 0.23.
The cabin of the previous model was criticized by many and BMW has given it a smart makeover. The biggest change is the new clean, uncomplicated instrument panel and centre console design. Now, main functions are grouped below the dash-mounted screen and around the gear selector.
Upgrades include BMW’s latest iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, a new 10.3-inch touchscreen display paired with a 12.3-inch digital cockpit, a first for the 3 Series. The system can also be operated via the iDrive wheel on the centre console, or through voice or gesture commands. Entry models feature a smaller 8.8-inch display and analogue dials.
The model also benefits from upgraded four-cylinder engines from the BMW Group’s Efficient Dynamics family and entry level models get 258hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit. The 6 hp increase in output and the extra 50 Nm of torque compared with the predecessor engine are the result of the focused optimisation of the BMW TwinPower Turbo system.
BMW has indicated the performance models like the M40i will be launched and flagship M3 will arrive by 2020.
