When Bentley decided to build its first SUV it didn’t have look too far. The expertise was available within the parent Volkswagen Audi Group with illustrious examples like the Audi Q7 or the Porsche Cayenne. The engineering synergies from various umbrella brands were fruitfully utilized to create the Bentagya.
As an evolution of the 2012 Bentley EXP 9 F concept car, the official production Bentayga debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015 as Bentley’s first SUV.
As a lifestyle SUV, it uses unibody construction and full-time all-wheel drive as well as Volkswagen Group’s bi-turbo W12 engine and MLB platform. The platform is shared with thesecond-generation Audi Q7 and the third-generation Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q8, and Lamborghini’s first SUV, the Urus.
Available in seating configurations for four, five or seven, the Bentayga was claimed as SUV, which has highest top speed 301 km/h.
The 2016 model Bentayga was the first to receive Bentley’s new twin-turbo W12 engine. Initially, the W12 was the only engine option for the Bentayga, capable of bypassing 6 cylinders if needed and gave the SUV a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.1 seconds.
As the model gained popularity in markets, Bentley sources a V8 diesel from Audi and shoehorned it into the SUV. This 4.0-litre, twin-turbo unit propels the Bentayga from 0–100 km/h in 4.8 seconds all the way up to 270 km/h.
Then in 2018, for the Bentagya, the a focus became “Power, luxury, usability and sportiness” which resulted in the availability of a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 with 0–100 km/h timing of 4.5 seconds and top speed of 290km/h. All Bentagyas feature 48-volt active anti roll system.
Bentley has also officially confirmed that the Bentayga will be Bentley’s first production plug-in hybrid using a petrol engine mated to several electric motors and a lithium-ion battery that should deliver around 50kms of all-electric driving range.
As with most models, Bentley has involved Mulliner, its bespoke division to offer even higher up the scale of craftsmanship and individuality. The options available include dual-tone paintwork, complementing interiors, large 22inch wheels. Additional touches include mood lighting, illuminated Mulliner tread plates and Bentley LED welcome lamps. Rear seat passengers can relax and enjoy a glass of something cool from the illuminated chiller cabinet, served in bespoke Cumbria Crystal flutes.
