With the new Giulia Alfa Romeo wants followers to forget the embarrassment they faced while owning the 159. The Giulia is the first model in the company’s relaunch plan, which involves a €5 billion investment for an eight car global line-up. Completely reworked from ground-up it is the first car based on a longitudinal-engined rear-wheel-drive platform. After two decades of mixed results with front-wheel drive architecture, Alfa dumped its front-wheel-drive predecessors to history, and based the 4C on an entirely new concept and platform.
The car was designed at the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo and is arguably a looker complemented with befitting powertrain and host of features. Three trims are offered — Giulia, Giulia Super, and Giulia Veloce. In fact, the restyled company logo, also debuted with the new Giulia.
A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission common but there are two states of tune depending on trim. Basic and ‘Super’ trims get 200 hp, while extra 80 hp is available in the all-wheel-drive ‘Veloce’ trim.
Standard features in the Giulia include a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 3.5-inch TFT colour instrument cluster display, leather interior, keyless entry with push start button integrated into the steering wheel, 8-speaker audio system, power driver and front passenger seats, dual-zone auto a/c, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 17-inch alloy wheels, remote engine start, rear LED tail lamps, auto headlamps, auto rain sensing wipers, and cruise control.
The Guilia Super adds 18-inch wheels, 8.8-inch widescreen touchscreen infotainment system, engine auto start-stop, 3 driving modes, HID headlamps with DRL, genuine wood inserts in door panel, instrument panel, and console, and ventilated heated driver and front passenger seats.
The top-spec Guilia Veloce gets more horsepower and torque, and 5 driving modes. Standard safety tech include multiple airbags including knee airbags for driver and front passenger, ABS with EBD, stability and traction control system, parking sensors, forward collision warning system, autonomous emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning. Optional safety tech includes blind spot monitoring system, and a rear view camera.
