Toyota To Debut New Supra At NAIAS Detroit In January

The new Toyota sports car is almost here. And this time, for real. Toyota will finally debut the 2020 Supra at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2019. 

After the much-awaited Supra’s reveal, the car will go into serial production in the first half of 2019. As often happens with highly anticipated and desirable cars, the first example of the car will be auctioned for charity.

Toyota itself admits that the new Supra is “one of the worst-kept secrets in the automotive industry.” The automotive world has been hearing about the sports car for a few years now and the anticipation heightened when the Japanese automaker unveiled the FT-1 concept way back in 2014. Ever since then, not a single aspect of the car has managed to stay secret, right from the fact that the Supra shares its underpinnings with the 2019 BMW Z4, or how much power it will make. Even transmission details are not hidden, with the project chief of the car saying there is no manual option on the cards.

Diving into what we know so far, the 2020 Toyota Supra will initially come with a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine sourced from BMW. Power output is pegged anywhere between 330hp and 380hp. A rear-wheel-drive layout sits beneath the Supra’s body, with power being fed through a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Later on, a turbocharge four-pot motor might also join the choice of powertrains, and hopefully a manual option as well. Oh Toyota, please give us a damn manual gearbox.

The Supra has been undergoing extensive testing around the world in light camouflage with its internal product code A90 plastered all over the body for months now, showing off what it could finally look like in production form. From what we can see, it looks significantly different from the BMW Z4, and has quite a few design cues that hint back at the first-generation superhero it is named after.

More details are scarce, but we are already bristling with excitement to find out how Toyota has tackled the famed car’s transition to the modern age. January couldn’t come any sooner!
