It’s not been long since Mercedes-Benz gave a mid-cycle refresh to the C-Class. However, fresh spy shots that were snapped by Motor Authority shows us that the Germans are already testing out the prototypes for their next generation model. We expect these prototypes to take its final shape and come off its covers by 2020 for the 2021 model year.

We could notice from the heavily camouflaged model, that the next-gen C-Class would sport almost the same dimensions as that of the current model. However, we see that the front of the car will sit lower, giving a sportier stance.

The interiors of the C-Class is likely to be closely related to the new A-Class and the GLE’s themes. The 2019 model of the C-Class missed out on the company’s MBUX infotainment system. However, the company’s expected to change that in the subsequent model. The MBUX includes a digital instrument cluster with a large touchscreen display that allows the driver to use natural speech to control various vehicle functions.

We have learned that the C-Class in question would be based on an updated version of the current model’s MRA rear-wheel-drive platform. This is the same platform that debuted in the current C-Class making it up to date and comparatively younger.

Reports suggest that the upcoming C-Class would have an advantage of being the lighter model than its predecessors. This is mostly due to the extensive use of aluminium instead of steel.

Talking about the mechanics, the car’s powertrain will consist of a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4 engine in the base model. Above this, Mercedes is expected to introduce a hybrid variant along with a C43 from AMG with the with the mild-hybrid system already found in the tuner’s E53 and CLS53 models. Meanwhile, the range-topper would be the AMG’s C63 which, according to reports will receive the electric treatment as well.
