SPIED: 2021 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS TO RECEIVE MID-LIFE UPDATE
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class range is nearing its life cycle’s midway point, and a refresh seems to be on the cards as the firm has sent out a prototype for testing before a potential 2021 unveiling.
The prototype spy shots are of the E-Class sedan, but similar updates will definitely make their way to other body types as well. Prototypes of the updated E-Class Coupe and E-Class Wagon have also been spotted.
New Design
The current E-Class range was introduced in 2017 with Mercedes-Benz selling the sedan first. This means that we could see a refreshed version in 2021. The cars will be given a thorough makeover. The prototype wears headlights designed after the latest GLE’s units. This will help the firm differentiate the E-Class from the C-Class. Currently, both cars look similar when viewed from the front.
A new grille is also apparent beneath the prototype’s heavy camouflage. This leads us to believe that Mercedes-Benz designers would tweak the front as well as rear fascia for the refresh.
New Interiors
The interiors of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are not fully visible in the spy shots, but the company will add its latest infotainment unit, the MBUX touchscreen to the new E-Class for sure. MBUX can be operated much like a smartphone or tablet, featuring natural speak voice activation.
The current E-Class is highly customizable in the interior department. You can choose different types of upholstery, trim, lighting themes and so on. The upcoming E-Class will also offer the same level of customization.
New Engines
As for powertrains, the firm could equip the refreshed E-Class with a new 3.0-litre straight-six motor instead of the current V6 mill. A mild-hybrid system could also be on the cards, along with a plug-in hybrid option. A high-strung version of the straight-six already does duty under the Mercedes-AMG E53’s hood.
The Mercedes-AMG E63 S will continue to sit at the pinnacle of the E-Class range, featuring a biturbo 4.0-litre V8. Expect Mercedes-Benz to unveil the facelifted E-Class in late 2019 or early 2020, putting the range up for sale in 2021.
