Volkswagen had hinted at its wish to introduce a new drop-top version of its T-Roc compact crossover. Confirming the plans, a new test mule of the T-Roc Cabriolet has been spotted undergoing testing for the first time.

The test T-Roc has a soft top shrouding a two-door body. While the regular variant managed to look elegant and classy despite its small dimensions, the same cannot be said of the convertible. Curvy SUVs with soft tops are generally not pleasant on the eyes, and the test mule is no exception. The bulbous body, two-door layout, and that soft-top come together to give it an almost bloated appearance.

The front fascia could be the same as its fixed hard-top sibling or Volkswagen could give it minor changes to differentiate between the two siblings. Either case, expect a mature, understated, geometric design for the front a la Volkswagen’s current design language. The taillamps and wheels of the test mule also look identical to the T-Roc’s but they could change while going into production.

There is no word on engine choices for the T-Roc Cabriolet, but we can make a calculated estimate as to the nature of the powertrain. The drop-top crossover could most likely employ a front-wheel-drive layout to offset the additional weight from the roof mechanism at the back. Internationally, the Volkswagen T-Roc comes with a wide range of engines starting from a 1.0-litre TSI mill good for 113hp, going up to a 2.0-litre 4Motion TSI engine that puts down 187hp through a seven-speed DSG gearbox. The choice of engines should also make their way to the T-Roc Cabriolet.

The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet will debut sometime in 2020 and will be very close to the design sketch the company revealed earlier this year.
