Porsche Drops the Top On The New 911

Top automotive headlines of 2018 were fixated on the latest generation of the 911 that was unveiled at the LA Auto Show. Porsche hit it out of the park with the 911 proving that there’s room for improvement even past perfection.

Expanding the same moniker’s portfolio the company dropped the covers on the 911 Cabriolet at the Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Similar to the Coupe, the new Cabriolet will sport the same 3.0-litre flat-six engine that delivers 443hp and 528Nm of torque, which is 22bhp and 29Nm more than the 991 generations.

Like the Coupe, the new engine is mated to the new 8-speed automatic transmission which replaces the old 7-speed transmission. However, a 7-speed manual transmission is also reportedly in the works for the future. The folks at Stuttgart states that the car is capable of lunging from 0-100kph in 3.5 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive 4S will warp in 3.4-seconds. This, however, is attained on the Sports Chrono Package. Top speeds for the S clocks at 305kph while the 4S reaches a maximum of 302kph.

The German manufacturer has graced the new 911 Cabriolet with its PASM Sports suspension on the Cabriolet models that comes with stiffer suspensions and sway bars, lowering the ride height by 0.4-inch along with adjustable dampers. The new soft top on the 911 Cabriolet opens or closes in about 12 seconds at speeds up to 49kph.

The new body is 1.8-inches wide while the wider rear now measures similar to the previous GTA and Carrera 4 models. The rest of the car inherits its characteristics from the Coupe that we saw at Los Angeles. This includes the standard LED headlights, a wider rear spoiler with multiple positions, and the taillight light bar that has become a design characteristic of all new Porsches.

Porsche has included a Wet mode for the stability control system this time around and offers several safety systems, including forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and, for the first time on a 911, a night vision camera system.
