In yet another move by Tesla to change the future of automobile industry, the company has unveiled its new electric (obviously) Semi truck that promises to have a range of 500 miles (804.67 km) in just one single charge.
Yep, that's correct. Tesla says that the range of its new Semi is more than sufficient for the American truckers as the research tells us that more than 80 per cent of the freight in the States is moved less than 250 miles (402.33 km). So, the Semi trucks should easily handle all those runs without any sweat. Well, talking about sweat, Tesla also claims that the Semi will have 'Megachargers' installed which will charge up the batteries to provide a range of 400 miles (643.73 km) in mere 30 minutes. That's pretty quick.
Being a Tesla, the new Semi is obliged to be quick when it comes to speed. Tesla says that with a load of 36.3 tonnes the Semi can do the 0-60 mph sprint in just 20 seconds, and in just 5 seconds without the trailer.
The new Semi is very driver oriented. Tesla promises to provide “a far better experience for truck drivers while increasing safety and reducing the cost of cargo transport”. The driver sits in the centre, unlike other conventional trucks. And every control is within his reach. There are touchscreens displays in the cabin and whole lot of other electronic gizmos to play around with. There are many safety features in the new Semi, like the Enhanced Autopilot, lane keeping assist and departure warnings, emergency braking and event recording.
Bookings of the new Semi are open and one can do that by paying a booking amount of USD 5000 per truck. Tesla says that the production of the Semi will commence in 2019. The coming two-three years will change the automotive and transport industry. Tesla wants its presence to be felt all around the world and with the pace that Mr Musk is progressing, we wouldn't be surprised if that happens sooner than expected.
