Car manufacturers around the world have been taking a lot of efforts since the past few years to introduce electric passenger cars, SUVs, and some trucks. Mercedes-Benz saw a vacant space in the MPV segment and immediately plugged the void with a new concept that debuted at Geneva.

The Mercedes-Benz EQV is the first vehicle in its segment powered entirely by electricity. While the electric van on display at Geneva Motor Show is just a concept, Mercedes-Benz will be bringing a production version to Frankfurt Motor Show 2019 later this year.

Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the board at Daimler AG, said: “Our Concept EQV is the perfect vehicle to accommodate all forms of family and take plenty of gear for an emission-free ride. And it will not remain a concept for long: The series model will have its world premiere at this year’s IAA.”

Mercedes-Benz released a specsheet of the EQV, describing a capable electric powertrain. A 100kWh battery powers a 201-hp electric motor mounted over the front axle. Tests performed on the EQV show the van can drive up to 400km before emptying its battery pack.

Recharging the electric van is not a big hassle since it can be charged for 15 minutes from a rapid charging station for a range of 100km. It can also clock a top speed of 160kph. Since it is part of Mercedes-Benz’s EV subsidiary called EQ, it wears a design more similar to its all-electric stablemates than the carmaker’s range of conventional cars.

Mercedes-Benz is also equipping the EQV with MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Xperience) infotainment system, adding the van to its fleet of digital cars. This leads us to think that Mercedes launching the EQV this year could be part of a bigger picture.

We already know that Daimler and BMW have agreed to collaborate on shared and autonomous mobility services. BMW does not have a commercial vehicle in its lineup. The EQV seems like the perfect platform for the two automotive giants to join forces over. Does this mean we can expect a happy announcement regarding the same at Frankfurt? For now, we just have to wait and watch.
