It has barely been a week since Toyota resurrected the Supra in an all-new avatar. While the car will not hit showrooms until later this year, the first retail example has already been sold at the Barrett-Jackson's annual auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The final bid for the Supra #001 came in at a staggering $2.1 million. Proceeds from the charity auction have been allocated to the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Apart from that, the winning bidder at the auction was also awarded a VIP track day experience including a personalised racing suit and VIP passes along with hot passes to the Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR round at Richmond Raceway.
The first Supra is like none other with special touches that highlight its significance. It comes with a matte grey exterior along with matte black wheels, red side mirror caps, a red leather interior and a carbon fibre dash plaque that indicates it's the first 2020 Supra.
Toyota brought back the Supra after 17 long years. However, unlike the outgoing iteration, the new Supra shares its platform and mechanicals with BMW Z4 without the roof (obviously). While we heard murmurs about multiple powertrains for the car in the future, the current model only comes with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six delivering 335 horsepower and 494Nm of torque. The same is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission helping it sprint to 100kph in a brisk 4.1 seconds.
At the Detroit Motor Show, standard variant of the Supra was launched at a starting price of AED 248,633. Meanwhile, the high-end trim goes up to AED 268,686 that is loaded and limited-run A90 edition. The BMW-developed engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger with direct fuel injection and variable valve control. Toyota has tuned this engine to offer 'segment-leading' torque performance even from low revs.
The Supra, however, was not the only model that grabbed bucks at the auction. The first 2019 Ford GT Heritage and the first 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 bagged $2.5 million and $1.1 million in their respective charity sales.
