The Dubai Electric and Water Authority (DEWA) on Wednesday concluded the second phase of its initiative to install 100 additional EV Green Charger stations across the city.
According to a statement that was issued by the DEWA, the number of charging stations in Dubai has now doubled from 100 to 200. “We are pleased to double the EV Green Charger stations from 100 to 200. This is in continuation of our efforts to support the Smart Dubai initiative, which aims to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world.” Said managing director and CEO of DEWA, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.
"At the time of the launch of the EV Green Charger Initiative, approximately four years ago, there were limited electric vehicles in Dubai, mainly due to a lack of EV charging infrastructure” he added.
The DEWA has currently installed a fast charging station at the ENOC petrol station in Hatta to increase the number of EV Green Chargers and as a step towards the sustainable development of the exclave. Additionally, DEWA has also partnered with ADNOC to install fast-charging stations at their petrol stations which will soon be inaugurated in Dubai.
Reports suggest that DEWA has also proposed a collaboration with real estate developers in Dubai such as Meraas, Nakheel and Majid Al Futtaim Group by installing EV Green Chargers at their projects and shopping mall.
"DEWA, as the electricity provider for Dubai, took the lead in setting up the first EV charging infrastructure to encourage the public to use environmentally-friendly vehicles. Today, we see an increasing number of electric cars on the streets of Dubai after establishing the necessary infrastructure." Al Tayer said.
Reports citing Al Tayer stated that the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy was working to increase the percentage of electric and hybrid cars in Dubai. Under government targets, at least 10 per cent of all newly-purchased cars will be electric or hybrid from 2016 to 2020.
