The 2019 BMW X5 features a new design, choice of new powertrains, and a new active chassis. The luxury SUV is now in its fourth generation and promises to be a better product than the one it replaces.

It was less than twenty years ago in 1999 when German automobile giant BMW broke away from tradition and built its first-ever SUV. Since then, the company has no less than seven SUVs in its lineup, including the upcoming BMW X7, with plans afoot for an eighth SUV. Considering that today’s customers are more inclined to buy SUVs and crossovers instead of the traditional three-box sedan, it makes sense for the Bavarians to expand their lineup to include more crossovers.

The 2019 BMW X5 is a fourth-generation luxury SUV. BMW prefers to call it SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). Until the launch of the X7, this is the biggest BMW you can buy. The X5 is authoritatively unique, with its humongous kidney grille taking center stage on the front fascia. One might think it looks out-of-place on the car, but in truth, the grille sets the X5 apart from a sea of identical looking SUVs.

When it comes to the choice of engines, the 2019 BMW X5 is no different from other SUVs in its range. The catalog begins with the X5 xDrive 40i (We despise all these code words too) offering a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that makes 335hp. Most buyers in UAE will most probably prefer the xDrive 50i that is powered by a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 good for 456hp. The 50i serves as the flagship of the range with its engine catapulting it to the ton under five seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250kph.  Until BMW’s M Division gets its hands on the big SUV, this is as fast as the new X5 can go.

Inside, the dash features BMW’s new interior design. The upholstery is top-notch as what we have to come to expect from all Beemers. There is a whole suite of driving assistance and infotainment systems. There are two touchscreen displays on the dash, and the panoramic roof can be specced to the starry sky option as found in Rolls-Royce cars.
