The 2019 Cadillac XT4 is due for a Middle Eastern launch later this year. Among its extensive features list, the compact SUV boasts of an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four motor under the hood.

Cadillac developed the turbo-four as part of an all-new global architecture of versatile, high-efficiency engines representing the next generation of advanced powertrain engineering. The engine debuted earlier this year under the hood of the new Cadillac XT4 compact SUV, featuring lightweight construction, industry-leading valvetrain technology, efficient performance, and on-demand power and torque at all engine speeds.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four motor will debut on the 2019 Cadillac XT4 slated for a launch later this year. The motor has a high power output per cubic centimetre, aided by an industry-first tri-power system. The system is designed to optimize performance and efficiency by offering three operating modes: High valve lift for maximum power, low valve lift for a mix of power and efficiency, and an Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) system to boost efficiency even further.

Christian Soemmer, Managing Director of Cadillac Middle East, said, “The modern, sporty character of the XT4 and its tech-savvy target customer from the millennials of the Middle East are perfectly suited for this advanced family of engines. Right from the beginning, the XT4 has been powered by an all-new engine that delivers exceptional responsiveness to inspire driver confidence with power, while providing competitive fuel economy for optimal efficiency”.

The turbocharged four-pot motor produces an SAE-certified 237hp and 350Nm. Direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger enhance torque output at lower engine speeds. The motor achieves peak torque from as low as 1,600RPM, maintaining the output up to 5,000RPM. This makes for a strong, flat torque curve spread over a wide rev range, offering a spirited drive to customers.

The turbo-four engine claims three world-first innovations starting with a three-step sliding camshaft that enables advanced Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) for optimized fuel efficiency. An electric purge pump helps the engine stay emissions-compliant. Finally, an active thermal management design traps wasted energy to enhance efficiency and reduce friction.

The list of innovations does not end here. An efficiency-enhancing electric water pump eliminates the drag a conventional engine-driven pump is subject to. It also enables continual cabin heating despite the engine turning off at a start-stop event. The integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head recovers exhaust heat for faster engine and transmission warm-up and quicker turbo response. Stop/start technology automatically stops the engine in stop-and-go traffic under certain conditions to reduce fuel consumption. This feature can be deactivated by the driver at startup.

The all-new Cadillac 2.0-litre Turbo engine on the XT4 will be mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with next-generation Electronic Precision Shift.
